Devlog #10

This week marks an important milestone in the production of our game. As we now can say we are fully feature complete and are only focusing on polish and integrating the remaining assets.

The last feature that was implemented is a new way of generating breakable objects into the scene. Earlier versions a set amount of objects would be randomly distributed around a map. We found sometimes that some players would break all of the objects 40 seconds into a round and would have nothing to do for the last 20. Therefore we created a new system where only a few objects are breakable at a time, once all of the objects are broken a new set of objects are highlighted to be broken. This way there is always a rotating amount of objects which gives the kids more objects to destroy and allows the mom to be able to defend them easier.

Additionally there were more breakable objects implemented into the game besides the pot. There are now TVs, TV stands and additional potted plants for players to destroy. This will make the game feel a lot more refreshing as you don't have to run around destroying the same pot model everytime.

We also managed to rework the scoreboard to now be filtered from players that have the highest score to the lowest score. This way it's easier to tell who is winning and who is on the bottom of the scoreboard. Additionally the in-game scoreboard has been updated to feature everybody's score so players can track who has the highest and who has the least while they are playing a round.

We also reworked the UI to be more readable. In early versions of our game a lot of our controls were text-based and since we would have had multiple controllers connected to one instance of the game we had to list a bunch of controls for different controllers. Now we are just showing an image of the button location instead of a specific button to be pressed. This way it should be universally clear what button to click on your controller.

The game's levels were also reworked to implement the new breakable object system and now contain a variety of breakable objects destroyed. Some other areas on the maps were also balanced to be more friendly to both sides.

In terms of work for next week the work that is set in stone is integrating more breakable objects into our scenes to create a fuller environment. Also creating more readable text and UI by color coding the player tags and the scoreboard to make it easier to identify who you are in the game.

Additional changes will be gathered through the feedback of Wednesday's in person play test and we will talk about areas we need to improve after that is completed.

That wraps everything up for this week and I will see you next week!
